Portuguese creates tool to evaluate the elderly after a stroke

There is a new tool wich allows us to evaluate the motor activity of a elderly person after a cerebral vascular accidente, what before only was possible recurring to different tolls of observation. This is the result of the PhD's work of José Cavaleiro, professor of the Higher Nursing School of Coimbra (ESEnfC).

Through the gathering of information in various domains, psychological, emotional, social or physic-functional, this new tool called Multidimensional Evaluation Protocol of the Elder after Stroke (PAMPI-AVC) will allow to evaluate the person's capacities, after suffering a stroke, to implement the adequate therapies to each patient.

Parliament wants stricter rules on food for vulnerable groups

The Parliament report, adopted yesterday, recommended better protection for vulnerable consumers, such as infants, young children and seriously ill people and distinguishes more clearly between foods for normal consumption and foods for specific groups.

The new rules have already been agreed with the 27 EU member states in the Council of Ministers, meaning its formal adoption will be only a formality.

Milks for babies up to the age of 12 months including follow-on formula will not include any pictures of infants or other pictures that might suggest specific health benefits under the new rules. The report also calls for a review of legislation for milk for children aged 12-36 months 'growing-up milks' and suggests new rules should be implemented.

Spanish have highest healthy life expectancy in Europe

The Spanish have the highest healthy life expectancy in Europe – and beat Australia, Canada, Norway and the USA as well.

Spain has an excellent healthcare system, ranked seventh in 2000 on the only occasion the World Health Organisation has compiled a league table. The UK was 18th. But it is not just the structures or even the skills of the doctors that matter. It is also the state of health of the people who arrive in the clinics.

Maybe the Mediterranean diet, heavy on fruit, salads, fish and olive oil, is responsible for the low death rate from heart disease – Spain has the 3rd lowest level of years of life lost. It also does well on a number of cancers – pancreatic, prostate, breast and oesophageal. EU scientific committee clears parabens in cosmetics as 'harmless'

Parabens are currently authorised as preservatives in the EU's Cosmetics Directive at a maximum concentration of 0.4% when used individually or 0.8% when used as a mixture of esters.

However, concerns have been expressed as to the potential endocrine-related toxicity of a specific paraben called propylparaben. The Environmental Working Group, an NGO, rates propylparaben as highly hazardous, saying the substance mimics estrogens and can act as potential hormone system disruptors.

In March 2011, Denmark notified the Commission that it had banned propyl- and butylparaben, the isoforms and salts in cosmetic products for children up to three years of age.
